What does science say about the relevance of a lockdown?

Prof. Michael Levitt, 2013 Nobel Prize winner in Chemistry, provides an analysis of the lockdown measures that were rolled out worldwide. He concludes that the contamination rate dropped before the lockdowns were announced. The lockdowns may not have had a meaningful effect, but the lockdowns do cause an enormous amount of economic damage.
